• Holistic water cycle approach that incorporates bioswales and wetlands and a highly conserving water system (rainwater flushes toilets, goes to a Living Machine to an underground irrigation system for three ballfields on site)
- This use of rainwater and recycled wastewater saved the client a cost of over $4 Million that would have been required to bring municipal water and sewer service to the site
• Rainwater catchment system
- 360,000 gallon cistern (top is a basketball court)
- Rainwater used for toilet flushing
- Rainwater used for firefighting system
• Well onsite for drinking water (only ~10% of the required water use for the site)
• Toilet waste goes to on-site, bioaquatic Living Machine system that cleans 30,000 gallons of water a day
- Water goes into storage tanks to be used for irrigating the athletic fields
- Athletic fields utilize an underground trip tubing system whereas no spray is put on the fields (High School Football stadium, High School soccer field and Middle School football field) and the system uses 40% less water than conventional sprinkler systems.
• Three constructed wetlands (storage capacities of 84,000, 52,900, and 110,410 cubic feet) and four bioswales were created to divert stormwater around the site to the wetlands without the use of curb and gutter and the reduction of stormwater piping costs
• Design of nine play fields (two football, one soccer, two practice fields, two baseball and two softball fields) along with two additional septic fields as a backup procedure as this sub-surface wastewater irrigation scheme was the first in the nation to be approved.
